The current status of Australia's environment has completely deteriorated over the past 5 years. With pressures of climate change, there's been bushfires, habitat loss and increased pollution levels; abruptly affecting many different ecosystems. These ecosystem collapsed or near-collapse. The environmental report completed by scientists last year was held back by the morrison government until after the federal election. While national and state governments have tried to address the destruction of the earth, the issue has come down to the limited funding towards conservation and protection of the land and wildlife. This report has shown nothing but a huge decline in Australia's environment and a state of crisis, in which we must act now.
As stated by the Greens environment spokesperson Sarah Hanson Young: “this is an emergency and in an emergency you take emergency action”.
Key Points Of The Environmental Report
Rivers and catchments are mostly in poor condition, and native fish populations have declined by more than 90% in the past 150 years, a trend that appears to be continuing.
Marine heatwaves have caused mass coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016, 2017 and 2020 (Report written prior to most recent mass bleaching).
Reefs around the country, and the species that rely on them, were in poor and deteriorating condition.
Sea level rise has affected many low-lying areas, including the Kakadu wetlands.
Destruction of indigenous land and heritage.
