Parents of Gabby Petito, who was brutally murdered by her boyfriend Brian Laundrie while the pair were traveling across the US, plan to sue the Utah Police Department over their daughters wrongful death.
Weeks before her murder, police were called to attend a potential domestic situation on August 12, 2021. The family claim that the police failed to properly intervene in a domestic violence affair. Two weeks later, Petito was found dead caused by strangulation. Laundrie was the only person ever identified by police as a person of interest and was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after returning alone to his parents’ home in Florida.
“She could’ve been protected that day,” Ms Schmidt said, adding that it is the family’s goal to protect other daughters and domestic violence victims from the same fate.
On Thursday local time, Nicole Schmidt, Gabby’s mother, as well as other family members, announced to media their intent to sue to Moab Police department for $A80 million.
