Dorian Borcherds, a scuba diver, was shocked by the discovery of a giant translucent creature along side him. What he captured on video was from the depths off Papua New Guinea, it has marine biologists around the world excited to learn more about the unknown jellyfish. This particular jellyfish was only seen once before this, just off the coast of Far North Queensland, roughly 30 years ago. Although, it could be a completely different species to the Papua New Guinea one.
"Saw a new type of jellyfish while diving today. It has cool markings and is a bit bigger than a soccer ball and they are quite fast swimming," Dorian Borcherds wrote at the time.
The species of jellyfish cannot be classified as "discovered" until it has been formally name and classified. Gershwin now believes the jellyfish captured off the coast of PNG is a new species. She told The Guardian it’s likely the new species of jellyfish probably belongs to the same class/group as the one seen in the 90s. This magnificent creature is described as "a giant brainless blob that is capable of moving decisively through the water".
"It is terrifyingly beautiful".
